Interview with Steve Rowe - Re-releases and more ...

Let Me Hear Some Noise !!!
We from MortifiNation wish to all our readers a marvelous and peacefully X Mass , an as a gift, read a brand new and exclusive interview with Steve Rowe! God rulz !!!

1 - Hi Steve! This year is very special for Mortification because some of his works are being reissued. Could you tell us the motivation for such an act?

Everything has sold out & so the 4 re- issued CDsare now out again on Soundmass. Relentless, Brain Cleaner, Erasing The Goblin & Scribe of The Pentateuch.

You can purchase these re- issue with extended artwork, new layouts & s lot of KILLER Bonus material from 4 very impportant Mortification concerts that we performed on each re- issued Album's Tout. Simply go to THE STORE at www,roweproductions.com

2 - How was the choice of materials that came as a bonus in the reissues? There was an earlier comment that "Relentless" go out with demo tracks as bonus
We decided that THE BEST Bonus Tracks were from the 4 important concerts relating to each Album.CRN Festival Germany 2002 is Bonus on RELENTLESS. Revolution Metal Fest Mexico 2004 is Bonus on Brain Cleaner, Nordic Fest Norway 2007 is Bonus ob Erasing The Goblin & Easterfest Australia 2013 is Bonus on Scribe Of The Pentateuch.

3 - "Relentless" and "Brain Cleaner" had few changes in its cover, the major changes occurred in the booklets (the Brain Cleaner booklet was lovely, congratulations!). However, "Erasing the Goblin" had a radical departure from the other two previouslyreleased versions. Why?
Adam from Soundmass wanted to use a different piece of Troy Dunmire's Artwork for the Erasing The Goblin re- issue to make it AN EXTRA SPECIAL RELEASE!!

4 - Could you tell us a little about the recordings of these three albums?
Relentless & Brain Cleaner where both Recorded at my own HAMMER OF GOD Studio before I sold the Studio in late 2004.Erasing The Goblin was Recoorded at Mick Jelinic's home studio & Scribe Of The Pentateuch was Recorded at Bayside Studios 5 minutes from here.Mark McCormack Engineered & Produced Relentless & Brain Cleaner with myself.Mick Jelinic Engineered & Produced Erasing The Goblin. The Tracking for Scribe was done by the Engineer at Bayside Studios & then mixed & Produced by Mark McCormack & myself.

5 - You will revive other classic shows the band's cd? Maybe do like Deep Purple that has provided so many of their official shows from the past? I think many would like to hear the Morty’s audio presentations in Cornerstone '93 (USA), '96 Christchurch (New Zealand), Brazil / Argentina '01, among other concerts ...
A lot of those types of concerts are on Mortification - TWENTY YEARS IN THE UNDERGROUND DOUBLE CD that Nuclear Blast released in 2010. Some other CLASSIC Mortification Shows are on You Tube on Mortification2010 Channel.

6 - Many "fans" of the band practically deny the Morty’s discography post - Nuclear Blast (which I think is very unfair, because some of my favorite songs of the band are these releases). In your opinion what is the reason of this contempt?
Well Nuclear Blast still works with 'some' Mortification releases. They released Live Humanitarian on Double DVD in 2008 & Twenty Years In The Underground in 2010. It is impossible to stay on Nuclear Blast these days unless you are a FULL TIME Band. Nuclear Blast loved & released The Silver Cord Is Severed & so it is not about the Music, but the fact that I cannot Tour full time because I am an L1 Paraplegic. It is great to hear that someone like's any one of the 15 Mortification Albums but even my Favourite Bands, there are some releases that I like a lot more than some others.

7 - Many were surprised by the news of the relaunch of the "Scribes Of The Pentateuch" Ep, since it is a recent release. The bandage it was so good to the point of asking this reissue? How many copies were sold in the first pressing? What will be different about this re-release when it comes to graphic art and bonus track?
The first release of Scribe Of The Pentateuch was on my label Rowe Productions. Origionally the owner of Nuclear Blast Records Germany gave us some money to Record 4 to 6 quality Demo Songs as Nuclear Blast was considering bringing back some new releases of early classic Nuclear Blast Bands including a new Mortification Album to celebrate 25 Years Nuclear Blast in 2012. I had a strong feeling that this idea would not go ahead for us & a bunch of other early NB Bands. So I suggested to Andrew Esnouf the Mortification Drummer that we use the money to Record 6 Studio Quality Songs! That is why there were just 6 songs. To release Scribe Of The Pentateuch & Wonrowe Vision 'Pictures Of The Past Present And Future' I had to do a Fundraiser that I called 'The New Life Achievement Program'. We got the money we asked for in that fund raiser & so we did a fan collectable run of just 770 Scribe. It was important to make the 1st Issue of Scribe Collectable for those who had donated money to it's release. Soundmass has now done more of a FULL RELEASE of Scribe Of The Pentateuch with a Brand New Cover, Photos & Layout as the first fan collectable pressing sold out quite quickly. Plus we have been able to add the Audio of our performance at this year's 2013 Easterfest appearance on which we performed some CLASSIC Mortification Songs including, Scrolls Of The Megilloth, God Rulz, J.G.S.H, The Destroyer Beholds & Hammer Of God!

8 - Thanks for the interview. The news about the end of Mortification fell like a bombshell for many Brazilians, because the band is very dear here. You can be sure that if we fail to support a concert of the band in our country you will see many Brazilian flags on their shows 2015!
Rather than retiring in 2015 I have simply taken a few months off from performing to recharge my batteries, work on my Life's Story Biography with our Australian Manager Vic Campbell and write a new FULL LENGTH 16th Mortification Studio release! I am 5 songs IN on the writing of the next Mortification Full Legnth Album & so half way. We are planning to return to doing a bunch of shows second half of next year 2014 & then Record the new Mortification Studio Album and 25th Anniversary Live Album & DVD in 2015! If there was ONE HUGE METAL FESTIVAL IN BRAZIL & THE PROMOTER COULD PAY US TO COME & PERFORM & MAKE EVERYTHING PROFESSIONAL THEN WE MAY BE ABLE TO COME FOR JUST ONE SHOW IN MID TO LATE 2015. The problem is that everyone who wants to bring us over to Brazil has no money. In 2001 I lost A LOT of money paying our own way down to South America & that is STILL DEBT I AM PAYING OFF TODAY! We could only come for ONE BIG FESTIVAL if someone was serious about bringing us over. Mortification will carry on inti the future as long as we can after I have a break for a few months, after doing Metal Music Missions Work 150% for the past 28 years! Blessings to all! Steve.

Once this is done, we will send the download link to you.

A pleasant interview with Jason Campbell

[ Para ver esta entrevista em Português, CLIQUE AQUI. ]

By Márllon Matos and Carol Mariana

Jason Campbell, frontman of the Death Metal / Hardcore band Erase (based in Vancouver, BC, Canada) tell us a bit about his experience with Mortification, the direction of his musical career and current projects.

First of all, thank you for accepting the invite to interview you.

Thank you for the interview!

How was the recording process of Primitive Rhythm Machine? It seems it was made in a hurry, wasn’t it?

The recording was spilt between recording drums, and then going on tour for about a month, and then coming back to LA to track bass, guitars and vocals. In today's standards it might seem rushed and or strange to, but it worked for what we did. I would have loved a little more time here and there, but I've always been good with making adjustments on the fly, as we change a few parts in rehearsal and during the tracking of the drums. The album was tracked and mixed at the record label's own studio called the Mixing Lab.

How did Steve meet you and Bill Rice?

I was in a band called Nobody at the time, promoting local shows for my band, local bands and out of town bands. I don't remember how the contact was first made, but Mortification was setting up a North American tour for their Blood World album, one thing leads to another and I had Mortification fly in right before they headed back to Australia at the end of the tour. Bill is a friend of mine who played in a local Vancouver band called Kerygma who were one of the opening acts on the Mortification show. Bill also helped with the promoting of the Mortification and other shows with me during that time period, Bill had gone on to play with some other bands and then became one leaders of Youth For Christ.

Tell us about the invite to record and tour with Mortification. How did it happen?

After the concert I kept in contact with Steve, and he had made mention that Michael might be leaving Mortification, I said I'd be up to the challenge if Michael decides to leave, Steve sent me some demo tapes of the songs he had written to learn the material for the album.

A week or two after that, Steve called me and said everything might be on hold and Mortification might be finished, as Phil Gibson (Mortification's drummer at the time) had also expressed his desire to leave Mortification. I asked his if he remembered the local band that opened up and told him that the drummer is available, that drummer was Bill Rice. Steve jumped at the chance to have Bill play with Mortification and the rest is history!

What did you do before recording with Mortification?

I've been in several bands, promoting shows small and large in the Vancouver BC Canada area, recording/producing/engineering projects/albums for bands.

What’s your opinion about your participation in the album Primitive Rhythm Machine?

It was a great experience! I come across studio or tour pictures and remember back to that time, it was a good time meeting a lot of great people! There were a lot of great shows on that tour, all of the shows stand out for their own reasons, I can't say there was a bad show, but each had their own vibe and energy!

What do you think about the other releases of Mortification, post-P.R.M.?

Steve sent me EnVision EvAngelene, I think it was closer to what Steve's real vision for Mortification should have been. I've only heard a limited amount of songs from the material after PRM & EnVision EvAngelene, so I can't really say much with regards to any of the newer Mortification albums and songs, but Steve keeps moving forward despite the medical things that have happened over the last fifteen years, he is a true pioneer of extreme Christian music scene!

After recording with Mortification, what direction your musical career has taken? In what bands did you play, which styles did you explore?

My musical background has always been heavier music, be that hard rock or extreme metal. After Mortification, I started a band called Erase with some friends, brothers Chris and Brian Moon. We wrote a bunch of songs and tried out a number of drummers, then I called up my old drummer from my band before Mortification called Nobody, Wylie Millar, who recorded our first album Mental Overload. After Mental Overload I went through a number of line-up changes with Erase, we recorded a second album called Soulscape. After Soulscape, the guys I was playing with want to change styles, so we changed the name and style and I put Erase on hold for awhile. With that came a short lived band called Semuta.

After Semuta I took some time away from music, during my time off of music I was a passenger in a car accident that took a friends life and I receive some serious injuries to my back and shoulder. Which caused me to re-evaluate my walk with the Lord.

During my time of healing from my injuries, I got plugged into a good Bible teaching church, taught some Bible studies, did sound for my church. After a few years there Brian Moon, the old Erase bass player who was a pastor in a town about an 8 hour drive away, called me and said he was coming back this way and was going to start a church plant right downtown Vancouver. I asked him, if he wants me involved, he said yes, I said, I'm there. Now for the for about three years I have been involved in a downtown Vancouver church plant.

About the same time I began writing music again. I was writing several different types of extreme music, I created a band called Undercurrents with a drummer friend of mine Sean Lang, we were able to record the drums at a top end studio in Vancouver called The Armory, bands like Van Halen, Aerosmith, Fear Factory who have recorded there in the past. And the rest of the album has been tracked at my studio.

From there I began looking at labels to release this new project and the first two Erase albums. But after I began talking with a number of labels I found that I'd be better off releasing everything on my own. So I started HammerDown Records, it was mainly started to release my own music but has grown to include a number of other bands. One of those being First Reign, a progressive, technical death metal band.

What’s your general opinion about the underground scene today?

I'm not sure, the Canadian scene seems to grow and shrink so quickly it's hard to say what will happen next, but there seems to be a number of really great bands that are popping up, one of them of course is First Reign!

And what about the same scene in Brazil, have you followed it? If so, what do you think of it?

There are some really good bands coming out of Brazil! I have been speaking with Krig, Prayer and Awake to release their new releases and possibly re-releasing some their earlier albums.

I remember I saw a quote from you that says “Grace changes everything”. Tell us a bit about how this statement is reflected in your everyday and how the grace of God has changed your life.

The quote is from the Chuck Smith book "Why Grace Changes Everything" when it all comes down to it, everything is about God's Grace, as Paul starts all of his epistles to his readers "Grace and Peace". Everyone is looking for peace in this life, but you truly will not experience the peace of God until you have experienced the Grace of God and that Grace is provided to us through the finished work of His Son on the Cross of Calvary

What are your current musical projects? Is there any of them that already has an album released?

I'm currently recording First Reign's new album in my studio, which will be released on HammerDown Records, I'm also finishing up some bonus tracks for the first & second Erase albums, Mental Overload & Soulscape respectively. Other albums that are coming up are Undercurrents is coming out with their debut album, Motorcyclesidecar will have an EP this Spring early summer and then in March/April time I'll begin tracking the new Erase, Undercurrents and Motorcyclesidecar albums, with a later 2012 or early 2013 release. I might be mixing a few other albums that will make their way onto HammerDown Records as well!

Once again, thank you so much for giving the opportunity to interview you! Feel free to make some final remarks.

Thanks you very much for this interview! I'm hoping this year will be a very busy one for me and HammerDown Records. Any new bands seeking out a label to help the get their music to the people feel free to contact me.

A brief conversation with Troy Dixon

By Márllon Matos

Hello Troy Dixon! Brazilian Greetings .Tell us a little about your life / career in music until you come to the Mortification?

Hello to you too… I was born in New Zealand and grew up in a town called Wanganui .
i started my first punk rock band at High school with best friend Josuha Louwrens called 'Engraved Invitation' and recorded an EP… such good memories.
When I finished School I joined my Guitar teachers Heavy Rock band called 'Daisy Chain' and traveled all over New Zealand, played at Parachute festival and others… recorded the album called "The Core That You Bite"… great experience.

I then moved to Melbourne Australia in 2002 and Got married to my Beautiful Wife Haley in 2006.

Since 2002 I was involved in various projects and eventually started up my own recording Studio.

How did the opportunity to enter in Mortification? You followed the band's career?

I didn’t follow the bands career as much as others but enjoyed what I heard. I saw Steve playing in Wonrowe vision in late December 2010. I knew Steve lived not far from me and contacted him by email to ask if he knew of any Christian Metal bands looking for a guitarist.
From then We started a great friendship. During that time and an opportunity came up to try out for a 2nd Guitarist in Mortification.

You participated in the writing process of "Scribes...”

No… not for the EP... a few ideas here and there... maybe next release I’ll have more involvement.

What can you tease about Scribes? Lyrics, arrangements, sound characteristics ...

Well... without giving to much away, it’s very different from the other albums. Brutal and experimental within mixing genres... a lot of back to basic old school death metal… influenced my bands like Master, Immortal, Benidiction, Bolthrower...

One of my favorite lyrics on the EP would have to be from the song "Jaws Of Life"… the phrasing is good and brutal vocal tones.

A question that plagues many, hehehe... Why did Scribes is only an EP and not a full cd? What should appear in this release as bonus track?

Steve answered a similar question on his question of the week segment… please do check it out... I guess you will have to find out what the bonus track is when its released… hehe…

Tell us a little about your other band, Amongst Thorns...

Well..."Amongst Thorns" is my solo project/band .. it’s all my influences put in to one force of chaotic sounds of pleasure.. Industrial, metal, experimental rock. I’m currently in the process of recording and releasing an EP called “Defeater” with special guest appearances before the end of the year. So stay posted folks!!

What is your favorite Mortification's song? And your favorite album?

Ahhh too many songs to choose lol... I guess my top favorite song would have to be "From the valley of the shadows"

One of my favorite albums is "Post momentary affliction". Very well produced... great tones and sounds.

Favorite bands and musical influences?

P.O.D, Demon Hunter, Bolthrower, Napalm Death, Blind Guardian, Soulfly, Klank, Circle of dust, Celldweller, Audioslave, The Accident experiment, Black label society, Sevendust, Behold the kingdom, Grave robber, Every knee shall bow, Static-x, Psycroptic, Miseration, old school metal, anything loud! And so many more… haha…
also check out a great Aussie upcomming metal band called "INCRYPT" with debut album 'Masterpiece' on iTunes, Facebook, Myspace, or Reverbnation… give them much support!!

Thank you for the opportunity to interview you. Feel free to make final remarks...God bless!!!

Thanks to all. Crank your stereo volume to full and keep the metal alive!!

April 2011 Update

A message from Steve

Hello Infiltration Squad family and welcome to April from The Priest Of The Underground. In latest news we in Mortification are putting together some Brutal New Death, Grind, Thrash Metal in the vein of The 1991 Self-Titled album. With all the rock and punk influences going into Wonrowe Vision, Mort is now a fully fledged Death Metal Machine once again! Timely is the CLASSIC status Scrolls Of The Megilloth received last week on one of the world's most popular Metal Websites http://v2.metalreviews.com/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29. CLASSIC status on this site is higher than 10 out of 10! We are looking at possibilities to Record Mort Album #15 later in the year. I want to welcome to the Band Troy Dixon as second Guitarist to Mick Jelinic. Troy has been working on new tunes with Andrew Esnouf (Drummer) and myself for the past couple of months. As a 4-piece we will make some Brutal Jesus Metal!!

Thank You to all the people who have joined the Infiltration Squad. I now have a private Facebook Page under the name Infiltration Squad. This Facebook is for Infiltration Squad Members, Family, Friends and people who I admire. If you have already joined the Infiltration Squad please come and friend me at Infiltration Squad. The Infiltration Squad is for Christians who love Metal and wish to connect with other Christians who love Metal, Facebooking back and forth via my friend list. Prayer points, Praise Points and Positive Words of Affirmation can be placed on my Wall or sent to me in private. You then have the opportunity to send the same messages to other members in private or place Prayer requests, Praise Points or Words of Affirmation on their Walls also. This is NOT A FORUM and IS NOT A PLACE FOR NEGATIVE WHINGERS! This is a non-profit Mission to connect Christians into Metal, many of whom feel disconnected from their Churches as I sometimes have because of the Music I listen to and the way I look. It is about encouraging one another to serve our churches and, believe me, then they will look past how you look and what you listen to!! I will break even on the Squad at 500 members. JOIN TODAY! Check out Squad Member #3 Brian Terrell's Display of his Infiltration Squad Pak in the photo above! Nice work Brian!!

Andrew, Troy and I wore the Squad shirts to a recent New Young Death Metal Scene Concert here in Melbourne. People commented on the Infiltration Squad shield/Coat Of Arms on the back of the Shirts. They are a great talking point. The Hebrew says Jehovah Nissi which means The Lord Is Our Banner In War! People also recognised Rowe Productions as an influential Australian Metal Label and the young crowd knew who I was. Andrew is 21 years of age and well connected in this scene that is free of satanists and drunken people out to make trouble. The Bands that played  were A Million Dead Birds Laughing and Ulcerate and are Pro Bands drawing big young audiences. This is the scene we will endeavour to begin performing in next year before spreading our wings overseas again. It was an amazing experience sitting in The Classic Arthouse Venue watching Bands in their early 20's perform 20 years after I was playing Death Metal in the same club when these guys were born! 20 years ago in 1991!

Here is the List of current members. The list is short so far but interestingly covers the entire world! If all the members in all the countries pass on the Squad message we will be 500 strong in no time at all. I need 100 new members this month if the Vision to reach 500 members is to be attained. Consider membership and what it will mean for you and others with whom you can connect.

Nathalie Keheyan from France is supplying me with Health Products from France on a monthly basis to replace my USANA health supplements that have helped keep me alive these past 13 years. With the cost of USANA at $220 a month it is now beyond me and I did not know how I would live without it. 3 years ago when I tried to come off USANA for financial reasons after just 4 days off the supplements I lost partial use of my left arm!! Most L4 Paraplegics lose a large % of one side of their bodies. The same DAY that I put in my USANA cancellation, Nathalie sent me the offer of similar high dose health supplements for free each month sent from France. Praise God! He knows what we need before we need it!! Infiltration Squad Member Chris Suit has sent some professional stills from Classic Mortification DVDs. See the Photo Gallery to check these out! Much Gratefulness to Brian for his photo, Nathalie for the supplements and Chris for the photos.
